CLINTON RYALS PROMOTED TO CHIEF
Chief Clinton Ryals, a 24 year veteran of the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department, was promoted to the rank of Chief and assigned to the Special Operations Division on July 4, 2019. The Special Operations Division encompasses the Department's elite Special Enforcement Bureau, housing the Department's special weapons team alongside HAZMAT and search & rescue services. It also houses the Aero Bureau, providing aerial patrol and rescue services to the County of Los Santos.
Chief Ryals' career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1995, when he graduated from the Sheriff's Academy and was assigned to Roberts Detention Center North Facility. Chief Ryals transferred to East Los Santos Station in 1996 and to the Special Enforcement Bureau in 1998, working in the Department's Emergency Services Detail. In 2000, Chief Ryals joined the Department's Special Enforcement Detail as a special weapons team member. He promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and transferred to Beacon Hill Station. He promoted to Lieutenant in 2006, first working as a watch commander before transferring back to the Special Enforcement Bureau as the Special Enforcement Detail Commander. He was selected to promote to Captain and take command of the Special Enforcement Bureau in 2012. During Chief Ryals' tenure as Captain, numerous technological advances were made to the way the Department's special weapons teams handled critical incidents. These advances resulted in increased officer safety and peaceful resolutions to volatile situations.
Chief Ryals was promoted to Commander in 2014, assigned to the Special Operations Division. During his tenure as Commander, the Department secured the purchase of new Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma helicopters for the Department's infamous Air Rescue 5 program. He has also stewarded the Department's Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS) program, which will allow deputies to more safely handle critical incidents by using drones to secure advantages without the risk to officer safety during critical incidents.
Chief Ryals lives in Mulholland with his wife. They have two adult children. Chief Ryals holds a Master's Degree in Law Enforcement Intelligence from the Michigan State University. He is a graduate of the University of Louisville Chief Executive Leadership Program and the FBI National Academy.
