During the early evening of January 16th, emergency call lines were flooded with reports of high gang activity in Jefferson. As normal patrol operations were proven ineffective, Lieutenant Ezio Poldilotta opted to deploy specialized riot gear to the location. Deputies were geared up in light tactical gear, which included a ballistic helmet and shield. From headquarters, they traversed to Jefferson in a convoy. After arriving in Jefferson, the deputies disembarked and were immediately confronted with a violent brawl on Washington Street between African American and Asian gangs in the area.

The deputies formed a defensive shield wall formation and, under the direct leadership of Lieutenant E. Poldilotta, successfully pushed the combatants away from the neighborhood. Deputies encountered heavy resistance as they pushed the combatants back, with several people hurling blunt objects and rocks towards the tight-packed shield wall. Despite all of the chaos, no deputies sustained serious injuries. After the neighborhood quietened down, the deputies quietly packed up and left the neighborhood.

When asked about the dangers and effectiveness of riot policing, Lieutenant Poldilotta stated that "physical presence is generally the most effective measure in counteracting riotous activity." He praised the work of the deputies involved, owing the lack of any serious injury to the discipline and professionalism of each deputy at the scene.
